Prepare
for an Emergency
- Water: At least one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
- Non-perishable food: Such as canned goods, dried fruits, nuts, granola bars, and other items that have a long shelf life.
- Manual can opener: To open canned food if you don't have access to electricity.
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: To stay informed about the situation and receive emergency broadcasts.
- Flashlights: With extra batteries or hand-cranked flashlights.
- First aid kit: Including bandages, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, pain relievers, and any prescription medications you may need.
- Multi-tool or utility knife: For various tasks and repairs.
- Whistle: To signal for help if needed.
- Dust masks: To filter contaminated air if necessary.
- Personal hygiene items: Such as soap, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and diapers if needed.
- Plastic bags and duct tape: For waste disposal and various makeshift repairs.
- Blankets or sleeping bags: To keep warm in case of cold weather.
- Extra clothing: Including sturdy shoes and rain gear.
- Copies of important documents: Such as identification, insurance policies, medical records, and emergency contact information.
- Cash: In case electronic payment systems are unavailable.
- Maps: Of your local area and evacuation routes.
- Emergency contact list: Including phone numbers of family members, friends, and emergency services.
- Fire extinguisher: Make sure it's suitable for all types of fires.
- Pet supplies: If you have pets, include food, water, medication, and other necessary items for their care.
- Special needs items: Such as baby formula, diapers, or items for individuals with specific medical needs.
